Case mix
ⓘ How CardsurgLog works
Purpose. CardsurgLog is your personal cardiac surgery logbook. Record each operation you do, get instant risk estimates, and keep a running picture of your own practice — activity, case-mix and outcomes. Everything stays private on your own device.
One record per operation. Identification is optional. If you enter an Egyptian National ID (14 digits), date of birth, age at operation, sex and governorate are read from it automatically. Prefer not to? Switch the identifier type to a short study code (or “No ID”) and enter the date of birth yourself.
Choose the procedures. Tick every procedure the patient had in that operation — valve, CABG, major aortic, congenital, alone or in any combination. The matching detailed forms appear. A single operation with mitral repair + CABG + ASD closure produces one record spanning three modules.
Outcome definition. Record “Died” if death occurred during the same admission or within 30 days of surgery; otherwise “Alive.” You can save a case as soon as the patient & operation details are complete, and add or update the outcome later by opening the case from My cases.
Your dashboard. As you add cases, your logbook builds a live summary of your activity and outcomes, and computes EuroSCORE II for each case.
Privacy. Nothing ever leaves your device automatically. Your logbook is held only in this browser until you choose to export a backup. You are in full control of your data.
Tip: your dashboard updates live as you enter cases, so CardsurgLog doubles as a running audit of your practice. Export produces an Excel workbook (a data sheet, a sheet per module, and a summary) plus a JSON backup you can restore from any time.
💾 Saving & backing up your data — important, please read
Where your data lives. Everything you enter is saved automatically on this device, in this browser. When you reopen this page (same browser, same link) your operations load automatically — you never re-type them, and it works with no internet. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.
Why you must still back up. Because the data lives inside the browser, it can be lost if you clear your browsing data, switch to another browser or device, or — on iPhone / Safari — if you don't open the page for about a week. A JSON backup file is your safe, portable copy, and the only way to move data to another device.
At the end of every session, before you finish:
Go to section 9 (Save & back up) and press ⬇ Export JSON backup. This file is your logbook backup. Keep it safe (save it to your phone's Files, iCloud or Google Drive); you can restore from it any time.
If you also want a personal copy that keeps the hospital, hospital number and patient name, press 🔒 Private backup (with names) and keep that file safely on your own device or private cloud.
Save the downloaded file somewhere backed-up — OneDrive, Google Drive, or on iPhone iCloud Drive (in the Files app). The file name already includes the date, so backups don't overwrite each other.
To bring your data back — on a new phone/laptop, or after the browser was cleared:
Open this same page.
Section 10 → ⤴ Restore from JSON backup… → choose your saved .json file. It reloads everything (restoring twice is safe — duplicates are skipped).
iPhone / iPad users — please do this once:
Open the page in Safari, tap the Share icon → Add to Home Screen. Always open CardsurgLog from that home-screen icon — this protects your data from Safari's automatic weekly clean-up.
When you export, choose Save to Files → iCloud Drive so your backup is safe and synced across your devices.
Rule of thumb: one JSON backup at the end of every operating session. The orange banner at the top of this page reminds you whenever you have cases that are not yet backed up.

This is your personal copy of CardsurgLog, so your details are entered once. They appear on your exports and reports. Your email is also your subscription licence — use the same address on any device where you install CardsurgLog, and your activation code will work on all of them. You can edit these any time, but there is only one profile.
Hospitals I work in
List the hospitals where you operate. Give each a short code and its name (e.g. CH1 → City Heart Hospital). The code appears in the case form below; the name prints on the operative report. To edit one, click it, change it, and press Add / update. Kept on this device only.
Operation financial categories
Add the ways an operation may be funded (e.g. Private, Insurance, Government, Charity). They appear as a choice on each case; the default is Unknown. Kept on this device only.
Referring cardiologists
Add the cardiologists who refer patients to you. They appear as a choice on each case; the default is Unknown. Kept on this device only.

📄 Practice summary report
Choose the period you want summarised — a year, a quarter, a fellowship rotation, any range. The report opens as a printable page with charts you can Save as PDF.
The report shows totals and percentages, plus charts of case-mix, sex, age bands and EuroSCORE risk, and a mortality-by-operation table.
